The figures relative to the 2006 harvest tell the story: more than 4,060 hectares of vineyards tended by over 2,500 growers organised into 14 winemaking cellars. This impressive production capability allows us to pursue a truly rigorous selection process and to offer wines of the highest quality as well as some extremely distinctive and individual bottlings. Our product line includes wines recognised world-wide as well as native varietals known only locally, but the philosophy remains the same: only wines from Piedmont, only wines that are DOC and DOCG! That philosophy begins in the vineyard: we require low yields per vine in order to obtain good sugar levels, intense colour, and the fullest flavour extraction. Professional viticultural consultants work closely with the grapegrowers, following carefully-designed procedures requiring, for example, selecting vineyards with exceptional sun exposure and soils, rigorous pruning levels, reduced pesticide use, cluster thinning, and later harvests, where appropriate, to improve ripeness levels. That same rigour is then applied in our winemaking facilities by expert production staffs. Grapes from the larger estates are vinified separately, with that estate name on the bottle label. Fruit from the smaller estates or from individual cru vineyards are blended, and the wines are given titles taken from the literary works of Cesare Pavese and Beppe Fenoglio. We invite everyone to visit us in Barolo: it is indeed a rare occasion when you can witness, from high above on a flying passageway, all the steps of winemaking, from fermentation through ageing and bottling!
